The Swiss flag is one of the most typical European flags, in medieval times many European states used a plain flag with a cross.
The Swiss and the Vatican flag are the only square flags. The red field with a white cross is adapted from the flag of Schwyz, one of the original three cantons.
On Hechtplatz in Zurich Ardvanderlinden made a field of 1200 Swiss flags to spread the message "unity through identity". People joined painting and liked the event. There were no outstanding reactions on the actual flag and no one reacted passionately. The Swiss painters only transformed their flag in a formal way; making a different cross or a dot in the red field, not showing conceptual unhappiness with their lives.
After the event we handed out flags and send flags to politicians to spread our message "unity through identity". The day after, the second largest Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger published an article about our project.
