Ardvanderlinden painted UK flags in Southwark. The Union Jack is one of the world's best known flags, because of its unusual design and the importance of the British Empire in modern world history. The United Kingdom was formed in 1707, uniting England, Scotland and Wales. In 1801 Ireland joined, but in 1921 the south broke away.
We noticed that it is hard to act spontanious in an organized city. It seems that the unkown is seen as a risk and therefore not allowed. It is almost impossible to get formal permission for painting....
We created a field of 750 flags in the Mint Street Park to spread the message "unity through identity". There was interaction with Londoners and some painted with us. People recognized the message and showed support.
Two days later we tried to show (no to paint) the field of flags in the London Bridge City Park and on the Queen's Walk in front of the Town Hall. Unfortenately it was not allowed on both places, a security officer said sarcastic: "it is even not allowed to smile here". We decided to hand out flags to discuss about identity. The comments were positive and in general the people wanted to see humans instead of countries.

Hello. I saw you and the flags outside the design museum. Thankyou for the flag you let me choose. When asked I said it was the union jack was more of a good piece of graphic for me and nothing more, seeing the photos of work it gives out a message of unity that I never saw before really.

By: Eva on: 2009-03-18 Hi, I just wanted to say thankyou for the flag you gave me, it's beautiful.
It's a shame they wouldn't let you display them at City Hall. I put it against the wall. I'm doing a lot of rebel songs so the Uninon Jack gave some balance, well in my head it did. Anyway, thanks again and good luck with your
art..all the best , Mike
