France, St. Savinien, la place du marché, February 2009

Ardvanderlinden painted French flags in the village Saint Savinien on la place du marché. The French Tricolore has a long history that goes back to the Revolution and it has become a symbol of liberty around the world (liberty, eqeality and fraternity). The blue and red colours of Paris are combined with the white colour of the House of Bourbon.
Soon after we started to paint a young guy from St. Savinien, Adrien Delage and local artist Anne Bosset joined. Together we created a field of 800 Tricolores and changed the view of the square. During the day there was a lot of attention of the regional and national press; among others radio France Blue la Rochelle, television France 3 Atlantique and the newspapers Sud Ouest, Hebdo and Angerien Libre. We gave interviews, discussed and explained our message "l'unite a travers l'identite".
In general the reactions to the field of flags were positive. The local pastor said: "beautiful, it brings happyness to my heart". A lady reacted: "it is a shit world. After Sarkozy's statement 'if you do not love France, leave her', the French flag is used in the wrong way. I believe we need unity". Sanne Rijnders made photos of this event.
The next day we went to the shop and discovered we are on the front page of the Sud Ouest newspaper.
