Ardvanderlinden painted about 2000 Dutch flags in Amstelveen to spread the message "unity through identity". A lot of kids joined painting and were enthusiastic. Most adults reacted distantly, we got the feeling Dutch people are not eager to give their opinion in public. Everything looks very balanced; 1 Turkish flag, 1 Greek flag, 1 Japanese flag, 1 American flag, 1 Israelian flag, etc. Is it to show Dutch are comfortable with different cultures and backgrounds? Or does it make a real discussion about identity hard?
Ardvanderlinden thinks a debate about the assumption that Dutch are broad-minded is needed to strengthen tolerance.
